Ella's Corner

Contracted for:

For Ella’s Corner, the design direction was to capture both simplicity and warmth while nodding to the legacy of Ella Fitzgerald.

Typographic Concept

The logo is built from a typographic pairing:

  • “Ella” set in a sign‑painter style script, echoing the feel of a personal, handwritten signature and paying homage to Ella Fitzgerald.
  • “Corner” set in a geometric sans serif, introducing a modern, minimal counterpoint.

The contrast between the flowing script and structured sans serif mirrors the restaurant’s balance of soulful comfort food and contemporary West Loop energy.

Design Considerations

  • The script for “Ella” brings personality and a sense of history.
  • The geometric sans for “Corner” keeps the mark clean, legible, and versatile across signage, menus, and digital use.
  • Careful spacing and scale between the two words ensure readability from street distance as well as on smaller applications like social avatars.

Brand Context

Ella’s Corner has been part of the West Loop community for over a decade, serving comfort food to Chicago Police Academy trainees, local students, and neighbors.

The logo ties this community role to a broader cultural reference: jazz and the Great American Songbook. The combination of a signature-like script and modern type gives the restaurant a brand that feels both familiar and current.

The result is a mark that can live comfortably on a brick façade, a to-go bag, or an Instagram profile, always carrying the same message: welcoming, local, and a little bit classic.
